Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad remained tight-lipped on speculation over President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s possible resignation, saying he had been abroad and did not know what had happened in the country.

However, reports suggest the President could submit his resignation as early as Friday.

Amid the speculation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad cut short his visit to Bangkok and returned to Bangladesh on Friday.

He arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 12:15pm.

Responding to questions from journalists about the President’s possible resignation, the Speaker declined to make any clear comment on the issue.

Asked about the speculation, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said, “I was abroad. So I have no idea who resigned or what happened here. I may be able to find out now.”

He said that if the President resigns, the resignation would be submitted to the Speaker and Parliament would elect a new President within 90 days, as stipulated by the Constitution.

Hafiz Uddin Ahmad travelled to Bangkok on 19 July for medical treatment and was scheduled to return on 26 July. However, he cut short his visit and returned to the country on Friday.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that President Mohammed Shahabuddin may resign on Friday or Saturday, with ill health possibly being cited as the reason for his resignation.
