Security tightened in Dhaka, checkpoints set up at 200 locations

Security has been tightened across the capital following several cocktail explosions and incidents of buses being set on fire.

More than 200 checkpoints have been set up on key roads since Friday night to search for suspicious individuals and vehicles.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said police have been deployed at four entry points to Dhaka, while searches are being conducted at more than 200 checkpoints.

General diaries and cases have been filed over Friday’s cocktail explosions and bus arson incidents. Police are collecting CCTV footage from the scenes to identify and arrest those involved, the DMP said.

The Special Response Battalion (SRB) also set up checkpoints on several important roads across the capital from Friday night and increased patrols.

Meanwhile, DMP arrested 515 people in separate drives across the capital over the past 24 hours. A total of 47 cases were filed during the drives.

Of those arrested, 30 were from the Ramna division, 34 from Lalbagh, 64 from Wari, 76 from Motijheel, 92 from Tejgaon, 120 from Mirpur, 37 from Gulshan, 46 from Uttara and 16 from the Detective Branch.

During the drives, police recovered two foreign-made pistols, two magazines, 10 bullets, three machetes, five knives, remnants of exploded cocktails, 53 iron nails, 94.35kg of cannabis, 11,167 yaba tablets and 121.3 grammes of heroin.

They also recovered three bottles of foreign liquor, 20 cans of beer, a private car, five mobile phones and Tk7,200 in cash.

Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Public Relations and Media Division, confirmed the arrests and said further legal action against the arrestees was underway.
