Sanjoy’s Bangladesh-inspired outfit steals spotlight at World Cup opener

Bangladeshi-American DJ and musician Sanjoy performed the song “SiirSiir” alongside Bollywood star Nora Fatehi and French musician Vegedream at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Canada.

While his energetic performance captivated the audience, it was his attire that drew particular attention amid the grand spectacle of the event.

His maroon-coloured suit featured prominent Bangladeshi motifs, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, lotus flowers and red-and-green elements representing the national flag. During the performance, he repeatedly pointed to the designs on his sleeves, seemingly expressing pride in his roots.

The Bangladesh-inspired outfit quickly became one of the most talked-about aspects of the opening ceremony. Videos of the performance went viral on social media, with many viewers interpreting the gesture as a reflection of Sanjoy’s love for and pride in his homeland.

Musicians and fans from Bangladesh shared clips of the performance online and congratulated the artist. His effort to highlight Bangladesh’s cultural identity on a global stage such as the FIFA World Cup has been widely praised.

Sanjoy also shared a video of the performance on his verified Facebook page, writing, “Dear friends, this is just the beginning of something beautiful.”

Born in Srimangal, Sanjoy Dev spent his childhood and adolescence in Chattogram before moving to the United States. He later carved out a distinctive musical identity by blending diverse cultural influences and musical genres.

His appearance at the World Cup opening ceremony not only marked a significant milestone in his career but also reinforced the message that, despite his international success, he continues to carry Bangladesh close to his heart.
