International United Nations Peacekeepers Day is set to be observed across Bangladesh today, Wednesday, with due dignity and respect. Although the day is marked globally on 29 May each year, this year its observance in Bangladesh was deferred until today because of the Eid holidays.
Bangladesh has long played a significant role in promoting peace, maintaining stability and supporting humanitarian operations around the world through the United Nations. In particular, the professionalism, competence and sacrifice demonstrated by members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force and Police serving in UN peacekeeping missions have earned widespread international recognition. The United Nations has formally acknowledged Bangladesh’s contributions on numerous occasions.
Bangladesh is currently recognised as one of the largest contributors of personnel to UN peacekeeping operations. Bangladeshi peacekeepers are serving diligently in conflict-affected and fragile regions across Africa, the Middle East and other parts of the world. Their responsibilities extend beyond ensuring security to protecting civilians, delivering humanitarian assistance, supporting electoral processes and helping to rebuild war-damaged infrastructure.
Many Bangladeshi peacekeepers have already made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out these duties. Their dedication and service have brought honour to the country and further enhanced Bangladesh’s standing in the international community.
A notable example of UN recognition of Bangladesh’s peacekeeping efforts dates back to 2007. That year, Bangladesh successfully observed International United Nations Peacekeepers Day for the first time. On the occasion, the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh sent a letter expressing gratitude to the Bangladesh Army and the officials involved in organising the event.
In the letter, dated 31 May 2007, then UN Resident Coordinator Renata Lok-Dessallien conveyed her sincere appreciation to Brigadier General Mohammad Mahbub Haider Khan for arranging the country’s first observance of the day.
The United Nations formally expressed its gratitude to the Bangladesh Armed Forces and also thanked Brigadier General Mohammad Mahbub Haider Khan, who was then Director of the Overseas Operations Directorate at Army Headquarters and Chairman of the International Peacekeepers Day Celebration Committee.
This recognition by the United Nations serves as a reminder that Bangladesh is not merely a participant in global peacebuilding efforts but a trusted and respected partner. The professionalism, humanitarian commitment and sacrifice of Bangladeshi peacekeepers will continue to strengthen the country’s reputation on the world stage in the years ahead.
