BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the presidency of Bangladesh.
Following his nomination, he has resigned as the party’s Secretary General and a member of its National Standing Committee.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi disclosed the decision to reporters on Thursday afternoon after emerging from a meeting of the party’s National Standing Committee held in front of the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat.
Rizvi said, “I’m pleased to announce that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated as the party’s candidate for president.”
He said the decision was taken shortly after a meeting with the party’s Chairman and Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
He further said that upon being nominated as the presidential candidate, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned from his positions as BNP Secretary General and a member of the National Standing Committee. He informed the nation of his decision through the media.
Several National Standing Committee members, along with the party’s Joint Secretaries General, were present at the time.
