5 arrested over Alex Emon murder

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested five people, including a key accused in the murder of teenage gang leader Alex Emon, from Mohammadpur and Keraniganj in Dhaka.

RAB-2 made the arrests early Friday based on intelligence information and recovered two foreign-made pistols, a single-barrel gun, six rounds of live ammunition and seven sharp weapons.

RAB-2 Commander and Additional DIG Md Naimul Hasan shared the details at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Friday afternoon.

According to RAB, Emon was hacked to death in broad daylight on 12 April at Rayerbazar Beribadh area in Mohammadpur over a dispute over control of the area.

Zahirul Islam Ripol alias Bipul and his associates allegedly carried out the attack.

A murder case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on 13 April, accusing 20 people under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Naimul Hasan said that acting on information about armed criminals staying in Shakta Union and Kholamora areas of Keraniganj, a RAB-2 team conducted a raid early Friday.

Hridoy, 23, was arrested from Kolchar with a foreign-made pistol and one round of live ammunition.

Sujon, 22, and Sohel alias China Sohel, 26, were also arrested with two swords and three samurai swords.

Rabbi alias Pinjira Rabbi, 22, was arrested from Kholamora Town with a single-barrel gun, five rounds of live ammunition and a samurai sword.

Based on information provided by Rabbi, RAB later arrested Bipul, the seventh accused in the case, from Mohammadpur. A US-made Beretta pistol was recovered from him.

The commander added legal proceedings against the arrested people are under way.

RAB said raids are continuing to arrest the suspects based on information from the detainees.

Bipul has six previous cases involving murder, robbery, narcotics, speedy trial, theft, attempted murder and intimidation.

Sujon has eight cases involving robbery, attempted robbery and violence against women and children.

Sohel has four cases involving robbery, theft, attempted murder and intimidation.

Hridoy has three cases involving robbery, murder, theft, attempted murder and intimidation, while Rabbi has four cases involving narcotics, speedy trial, murder, attempted murder and intimidation.
