The Advisory Council of the interim government seeks a common opinion from political parties on controversial issues related to the implementation of the July Charter and the referendum. It has been urged to discuss among themselves and, if possible, come to a common decision within seven days.
In an emergency meeting held at the office of the Chief Advisor on Monday, it was decided to seek opinions from anti-fascist political parties, said Law Advisor Professor Asif Nazrul.
He gave this information at a press conference held at the office of the Chief Advisor after the meeting of the Advisory Council.
Asif Nazrul said, ‘The Advisory Council meeting discussed the finalization of the July National Charter constitutional reform order proposed by the Consensus Commission and the organization of the referendum mentioned in it and the content of the referendum. It was observed in the meeting that despite long discussions in the Consensus Commission, there are different opinions on the recommendations of some reforms.’
He said, ‘In addition, the meeting expressed concern over the differences that have arisen among political parties on the questions of when the referendum will be held and what its content will be. In this context, the meeting expressed the opinion that it is necessary to take a final decision on an urgent basis in the light of the proposals of the consensus commission on when the referendum will be held, what the content of the referendum will be, and what steps will be taken regarding the different opinions stated in the July Charter.
While reading the written statement, he said, “In these cases, the political parties that have been allies of the anti-fascist movement are urged to discuss among themselves on their own initiative and provide unified guidelines to the government as soon as possible—if possible within the next week.”
He also said, “If such instructions are received, it will be much easier for the government to take a decision. We all need to keep in mind that there is no room for delay in the current situation. The government’s determination to hold the next parliamentary elections in the first half of February 2026 was reiterated at the meeting of the advisory council.”
In response to a question from journalists about the meeting of the advisory council, he said, “I have informed you in writing what happened in today’s meeting. There is no scope to say anything beyond this, there is no need.’
Asked what the government would do if the parties could not reach a consensus within 7 days, Asif Nazrul said, ‘We did not give any ultimatum, we have called for it. We will wait, then the government will definitely act like a government.’
In response to another question, he said, ‘The advisory council led by the chief advisor will take the final decision. We have not deviated from this decision. You can see it as a good sign that we are expecting unified recommendations from political parties.’
Stating that the government will not organize this discussion of political parties again, he said, ‘The anti-fascist political parties have discussed many important decisions on their own in the last 15 years. They have protested together in very adverse times, have been subjected to torture. We expect them to discuss on their own initiative and give us a unified directive.’
Yesterday, Jamaat invited BNP for discussions. Referring to that, the legal advisor said, ‘We welcome it.’
When asked about the difference between the consensus commission’s discussion and implementation recommendations, the legal advisor did not comment. He said, “If they discuss, it will be easier for us. If they cannot give unified instructions, the government will definitely take a decision like the government.”
