A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed former lawmaker Nasimul Alam Chowdhury arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the July student-mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order following a police petition, said prosecution department Sub-Inspector Kamal Uddin.
Earlier, Badda Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Rashedul Islam, also the investigating officer of the case, filed a petition on 24 September seeking to show Nasimul Alam arrested in the case.
The court then fixed Wednesday for a hearing in the presence of the accused.
According to the petition, preliminary evidence had been found of Nasimul Alam’s direct and indirect involvement in the incident. The investigating officer sought his detention in the case to facilitate a proper investigation.
According to the case documents, on 30 July 2024, students and members of the public were holding a peaceful programme on the paved road at Merul Badda in Dhaka as part of the quota reform movement.
During the incident, SM Abdur Rob, 54, was shot and critically injured in the attack allegedly carried out by the accused. He later remained under treatment for a prolonged period.
