Court orders freezing of bank account of Anisul Huq’s younger brother’s wife

A court in Dhaka on Tuesday ordered the freezing of a bank account belonging to Jebunnesa Begum Huq, wife of former law minister Anisul Huq’s younger brother.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to court documents, the bank account of Jebunnesa Begum Huq held Tk4.89 crore with Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC, Banani Branch, as of 19 July 2026.

Earlier, on 27 September, ACC Deputy Director and investigating officer of the case Md Jahangir Alam filed the application.

Md. Tanzir Ahmed, ACC Assistant Director in the Public Relations Division, confirmed the information.

The ACC said in its application that a case was filed against Anisul Huq and others for allegedly acquiring and possessing Tk146.19 crore in assets inconsistent with their known sources of income between 2014 and 2024 through criminal misconduct, abuse of power and dishonest means, in their own names and those of people connected to their interests.

The application also said Tk349.15 crore was deposited into 29 bank accounts and Tk316.48 crore was withdrawn through suspicious transactions.

The ACC further said that during the investigation, it found information indicating that Anisul Huq and investigation-linked accused Mohammad Iqbal, Sheikh Md Iftekharul Islam and Jebunnesa Begum Huq had acquired Tk172.24 crore in assets beyond their known sources of income.

It also said Tk375.50 crore was deposited into 23 bank accounts belonging to the accused, while Tk361.73 crore was withdrawn through unusual and suspicious transactions.

The ACC sought the freezing order, stating that the accused was allegedly attempting to withdraw, transfer, otherwise dispose of the money deposited in the bank account through illegal means. In the interest of a proper investigation into the case, it was necessary to immediately freeze the bank account held in the name of investigation-linked accused Jebunnesa Begum Huq, the plea added.
