Dengue claims seven more lives in 24 hours

Seven more deaths were reported from dengue in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 171 this year.

In the 24-hour span, 1,753 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, raising the total caseload to 56,916 in 2026.

Among the fatalities, which included four men and three women, three were reported in Khulna division, and one each in Chattogram, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the latest cases, 186 patients were admitted to hospitals in Barishal division, 177 in Chattogram division, 394 in Dhaka division, 175 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), 174 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 349 in Khulna division, 83 in Mymensingh division, 153 in Rajshahi division, 53 in Rangpur division, and nine in Sylhet division.

DGHS data shows that women account for 52.4% of fatalities and men 47.6% so far this year, while men account for 62.5% of infections and women 37.5%.

According to official data, Bangladesh recorded 102,861 dengue cases and 413 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in 2025.

In 2024, the country reported 101,214 dengue infections and 575 deaths.

The previous year (2023) saw the country’s worst outbreak on record, with 1,705 deaths and 321,179 hospitalisations.
