Bangladeshi man shot dead in Philadelphia

A Bangladeshi man working as a food delivery driver for DoorDash was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Kingsessing area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as 43-year-old Mohammad Mahfuzul Haque, was delivering food to customers through the popular US-based online food delivery platform when he was attacked, reports US broadcaster NBC10 Philadelphia.

While the broadcaster did not specify Mahfuzul’s nationality or immigration status, several Bangladeshi community media outlets in the United States identified him as a Bangladeshi.

According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of South Ithan Street at around 9:30pm local time.

Police found Mahfuzul lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. A vehicle with its engine still running was parked nearby, and a large DoorDash delivery bag was found inside.

Haque was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 10pm, Small said.

Investigators recovered two spent rifle shell casings within inches of the victim’s body, indicating that he had been shot at close range.

Police believe the killing was a targeted attack. Three masked individuals dressed in black have been identified as suspects, although their images have not yet been released.

In a statement, a DoorDash spokesperson said the company was cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities in the investigation.

“We are working closely with law enforcement to help bring those responsible for this senseless act of violence to justice,” the spokesperson said.

Philadelphia Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the department or submit tips anonymously online.
