A convoy of more than 100 motorcycles in front of several factories in the Tongi Industrial Area has triggered panic among workers, business owners and local residents, amid allegations that a group attempted to pressure factory authorities over the lucrative industrial scrap trade.

The incident occurred at around 11:57am on Sunday (28 June) in front of Faiza Button and Zipper Ltd and Hossain Dyeing factories in the Pagar area of Tongi Industrial City.

According to factory officials, more than 100 motorcycles suddenly gathered outside the factories, creating alarm among workers, employees and nearby traders. The situation prompted many surrounding businesses to close their shops temporarily.

Witnesses said most of those participating in the convoy tried to enter the factory premises but were stopped by security guards. A delegation of eight to 10 people was later allowed inside to meet factory management.

During the meeting, the group allegedly identified themselves as associates of a ‘senior political leader’ and warned the authorities not to award contracts for the sale of industrial scrap—commonly known as jhut—to anyone without reaching an understanding with them.

Al Amin, an administrative officer at Faiza Button and Zipper Ltd, said the visitors introduced themselves as representatives of a prominent political figure.

“They told us that the factory’s scrap trade must not be given to anyone without an agreement with them,” he said.

He added that foreign buyers were present inside the factory during the incident and were also alarmed by the situation.

Nuruzzaman, the factory’s current scrap contractor, said the business was being conducted in accordance with the rules and that there was no scope for external interference.

Several shopkeepers near the factories said they shut their businesses after seeing the large motorcycle convoy, fearing unrest.

Local sources claimed that following the political transition in 2024, the factory remained closed for a period before resuming operations after reaching an understanding with local BNP leaders.

They also alleged that rival factions within the Gazipur Metropolitan BNP are now at odds over control of the industrial scrap trade, raising concerns about a possible deterioration in law and order.

Regarding the incident, Superintendent of Police Md Amzad Hossain of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 said authorities were aware of the matter.

“We have learned about the incident. The motorcycle convoy is being investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken after the inquiry is completed,” he said.
