Police used batons, water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesting customers demanding the resignation of the newly appointed chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh.
Members of the Islami Bank Customers’ Forum gathered in front of the bank’s head office from Monday morning, carrying banners and placards, and chanting slogans calling for the chairman’s resignation.
They staged demonstrations over the appointment, which they strongly opposed.
Eyewitnesses said that around 9:30am, police moved in to remove the protesters from the area. At one stage, officers used batons, water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, triggering panic at the scene and forcing the demonstrators to scatter.
The protesters alleged that police used excessive force against what they described as a peaceful programme.
They claimed that the newly appointed chairman is an associate of the controversial S Alam Group and warned that his appointment could lead to further “plundering” of the bank.
Although the protesters were initially dispersed, they later returned to the area and resumed their demonstration. Additional police have since been deployed, and security around the bank has been tightened.
