IndiGo flight makes emergency landing in Chennai after engine failure

An IndiGo flight from Kolkata to Chennai made an emergency landing at Chennai Airport on Tuesday night after its left engine developed a technical problem shortly before landing.

Flight 6E-723, carrying 224 passengers and crew members, informed air traffic control at around 11:29pm on 11 August after the pilot detected an engine failure while approaching Chennai, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials. The flight was scheduled to land at 11:30pm.

Following the pilot’s alert, Chennai airport activated its full emergency response protocol. Officials familiar with the incident said the aircraft also reported an oil leak.

Fire tenders, medical teams and other emergency personnel were deployed at the airport as the aircraft prepared to land. The flight remained airborne while emergency arrangements were put in place.

The aircraft landed safely on Runway 25 at around 11:37pm, approximately seven minutes after its scheduled arrival. All 224 people on board were reported safe, with no injuries or casualties.

The airport’s full emergency response was called off at 11:47pm, after which normal operations resumed.

After all passengers had disembarked, engineers inspected the aircraft to assess the extent of the technical problem. Following the inspection, the aircraft was declared unairworthy around midnight and towed to a remote parking bay. It will remain grounded until the necessary repairs and further safety checks are completed.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The probe is expected to examine the engine failure, the reported oil leak, the aircraft’s technical condition and the procedures followed by the crew and airport authorities during the emergency.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of aviation safety following a series of recent aircraft-related incidents involving Indian carriers.
