Four killed as pickup overturns in Rangamati

Four people, including two women, were killed and two others injured after a pickup van overturned in the Manikchhari area of Rangamati early Sunday.

The accident occurred in front of the Manikchhari Army Camp in Sapchhari Union of Sadar upazila in the early hours of 16 August.

Police and local sources said the pickup was travelling from Rangamati town towards Kutukchhari Bazar carrying several passengers. When it reached the Manikchhari area, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn on the road.

Several passengers sustained serious injuries in the accident.

The injured were rescued and taken to Rangamati General Hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead.

The deceased were identified as Meghrani Chakma, Shantana Chakma, Shova Chakma and Shanti Ranjan Chakma. The bodies of three of the victims were kept at the hospital’s emergency department.

The injured included pickup driver Gyan Bikash Chakma and Suman Chakma, who are receiving treatment at the hospital. One critically injured person was referred to Chattogram but died on the way, according to the hospital authorities.

Rangamati General Hospital’s Resident Medical Officer Dr Shawkat Akbar said six people were brought to the hospital following the accident.

“Three of them were brought dead. We referred another critically injured person to Chattogram, but he died on the way. The other two are receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station said the victims and injured passengers had been taken to Rangamati General Hospital.

“We are preparing the inquest reports. The process of handing over the bodies to the families will begin after the reports are completed,” he said.
