Ex-railway minister shown arrested again after securing bail

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered that former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujon be shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of a man named Md Parvez Mia in the Jatrabari Police Station area of the capital during the July uprising.

Following a police petition, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order, said state prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid.

Earlier, on 19 August, the investigation officer of the case, Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Zakir Hossain, filed a petition seeking to show him arrested in the case. The court then fixed Sunday for a hearing in the presence of the accused.

During Sunday’s hearing, the accused was brought to the courtroom amid tight police security. He then urged the court to consider the issue of arresting him in a new case after he had secured bail in another case.

According to the case statement, Md Parvez Mia took part in the July uprising on 5 August 2024, when he was shot and injured by bullets allegedly fired by the accused.

He was initially taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead.

A murder case over the incident was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on 29 October 2024.

Sujon was detained from Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka, on 16 September 2024.
