Ex-lawmaker Shahjahan Omar shown arrested in BNP leader Ishaq murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered that former lawmaker Muhammad Shahjahan Omar be shown arrested as a suspected accused in a case filed over the killing of BNP leader Ishaq Zomaddar during the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the order, allowing a petition filed by Adabor Police Station Sub-Inspector Mahesh Chandra Singh, the investigation officer of the case.

According to the case document, Ishaq Zomaddar was shot on the afternoon of 5 August 2024 near the field opposite Shyamoli Club in the Adabor area.

He was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where the doctors on duty declared him dead.

According to the plea seeking to show Shahjahan Omar arrested, doing so was necessary for a proper investigation and to prevent him from going into hiding after securing bail. The petition also stated that several murder, corruption and explosives cases had also been filed against him.

Police arrested Shahjahan Omar on 20 November 2024, and he has remained in jail since then.
