The honourable status of business in Islam

Business and trade occupy an important place in Islam. Far from discouraging the pursuit of wealth, Islam recognises lawful business as an honourable means of earning a livelihood, provided it is conducted with honesty, fairness and social responsibility.

The Quran permits trade and prohibits unjust enrichment. It says: “Allah has permitted trade and forbidden usury” (2:275). The verse establishes a fundamental principle: earning through legitimate commercial activity is permissible, while exploitation and unjust financial gain are not.

Islam places particular emphasis on honesty in business dealings. Traders are expected to be truthful about the quality, quantity and condition of their goods and services. Deception, fraud, bribery, hoarding and manipulation of prices for unjust gain are condemned. The Quran warns those who give less than due in measure and weight (83:1-3).

The Prophet Muhammad also placed great value on trustworthy commerce. In a well-known hadith, he said that a truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful and the martyrs. This reflects the high moral status Islam can accord to businesspeople who maintain integrity in their dealings.

Business in Islam is therefore not merely about making money. A person’s intention and conduct matter. Providing useful goods or services, creating employment, fulfilling contracts, paying workers fairly and contributing to society can all turn commercial activity into a source of reward.

At the same time, Islam does not regard wealth as an end in itself. Wealth comes with responsibilities towards family, workers, customers and the wider community. Muslims are encouraged to give charity and support those in need.

Ultimately, Islam views business as noble when it combines lawful earnings with ethical conduct. Profit is permissible, even desirable as a legitimate reward for enterprise and risk, but it should never come at the expense of justice, honesty or human dignity. In that sense, the nobility of business in Islam lies not simply in what one earns, but in how one earns it and how that wealth is used.
