Sri Lanka extends $1m aid to flood-hit Nepal

Sri Lanka has extended US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal following devastating floods and landslides that have caused loss of life, displacement and widespread destruction.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka directed the government to provide the financial contribution to support Nepal’s ongoing humanitarian and relief efforts, said a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism on Thursday.

The president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disaster and conveyed condolences from the Sri Lankan government and people to Nepal, particularly to families who lost loved ones.

Recalling the longstanding bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two countries, Dissanayaka said Sri Lanka stood firmly with the people of Nepal in their hour of need.

The contribution will support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the floods and landslides.

Earlier on Thursday, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath spoke with his Nepalese counterpart Shisir Khanal, conveying Sri Lanka’s condolences, support and solidarity with Nepal.

The Sri Lankan government said it would remain closely engaged with Nepal and explore further avenues to contribute to relief and recovery efforts.
