Sobhana Mostary and Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty will look to carry their improved form into the final ODI against Australia after climbing 11 places each in the latest ICC women’s ODI batting rankings, released on Tuesday.
Tigresses will face the hosts in Brisbane on Wednesday, hoping to avoid a series whitewash after losing the first two matches convincingly. Australia won the opening ODI by seven wickets before cruising to a nine-wicket victory in the second to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Despite the defeats, Sobhana and Joty provided a rare bright spot in the second match with a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership. Sobhana struck 118 off 134 balls, hitting 18 fours, to register the highest individual score by a Bangladesh woman in ODI cricket. The right-hander also became the first Bangladesh woman to score an international century against Australia.
Joty remained unbeaten on 74 as the pair added 195 runs. However, the 29-year-old has accumulated 103 runs in the first two matches at a tortoise pace of 33.72 and 64.91 strike rates.
The middle-order has moved up to 35th in the rankings with 535 rating points, while the skipper has climbed to 25th with 566. Ritu Moni also gained 10 places to reach 78th. However, Sharmin Akhter slipped five places to 30th, while Fargana Hoque dropped 12 spots to 67th.
Australia’s Georgia Voll, meanwhile, has been the leading run-scorer in the series with 150 runs.
The challenge remains formidable for the green and red, who have lost their last four ODIs, while the yellow women are riding an eight-match winning streak in the format. The hosts have also won all seven of their previous ODI meetings with Bangladesh.
For Joty’s side, the final match offers an opportunity to restore some confidence and return home with a positive result.
