Bangladesh white-ball captain Litton Das reached the 9,000-run milestone in international cricket with a century in the Abu Dhabi Test on the eve of his birthday.
On Tuesday, as he turned 32, Litton had another reason to celebrate, setting a world record for a wicketkeeper-batter by scoring fifty-plus in both innings and recording nine dismissals in a Test match.
Born in Dinajpur on 13 October 1994, Litton achieved the feat against Afghanistan during his 11-year-and-four-month international career.
After scoring 53 in the first innings, the right-hander followed it up with 102 in the second. Behind the stumps, he recorded nine dismissals, comprising eight catches and a stumping, breaking South Africa’s Denis Lindsay’s 59-year-old record.
Lindsay had scored 69 and 182 in the two innings against Australia in Johannesburg in 1966, while recording eight dismissals, six catches in the first innings and two in the second.
Litton surpassed Lindsay just before lunch on the fifth day of the Abu Dhabi Test, taking a stunning flying catch off Ebadot Hossain to dismiss Ikram Alikhil. By then, he had already taken eight catches and completed a stumping.
The 32-year-old also leads Bangladesh’s wicketkeepers in Test dismissals, with 142 in 78 innings, well ahead of Mushfiqur Rahim’s 113 in 99 innings.
Litton’s nine dismissals in Abu Dhabi also surpassed the previous Bangladesh record of seven, set by Khaled Mashud Pilot against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2004.
A century on the eve of his birthday, 9,000 international runs and a world record on his birthday have made the Abu Dhabi Test a memorable chapter in Litton’s career.
