Speaker calls for stronger ties based on mutual respect and sovereignty

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday met Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and discussed various aspects of Bangladesh-India relations.

The meeting was held at the Speaker’s office in the National Parliament on 2 September.

During the meeting, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said relations between Bangladesh and India had always progressed through various challenges and tensions, while changes in time and circumstances had also brought changes to the historical relationship between the two countries.

He emphasised that relations between the peoples of Bangladesh and India should form the foundation of bilateral ties.

The Speaker also stressed the need to further strengthen relations on the basis of mutual respect and respect for each other’s independence and sovereignty.

High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said the Indian government was keen to develop a people-centred relationship between the two countries. He said India wanted to work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of both countries by further strengthening people-to-people ties.

The two sides also exchanged views on a range of issues, including exchanges of visits by parliamentary delegations, the Rohingya crisis and repatriation, sports, and cultural exchanges.

During the meeting, Trivedi conveyed an invitation from the Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha to Hafiz Uddin Ahmad to visit India.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing exchanges of visits between parliamentary delegations of the two countries.

Representatives of the Indian High Commission, the Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat and other relevant officials were present at the meeting.
