A court in Dhaka on Tuesday imposed a bar on Emma Claire Burton, wife of former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, from leaving the country in connection with a corruption case.

Acting Judge Md Alamgir of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order following a petition, ACC prosecutor Tariqul Islam confirmed.

Earlier, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya, also the investigation officer of the case, sought the travel ban against Emma Claire.

According to the petition, the accused failed to submit her wealth statement to the ACC in the prescribed form within the stipulated time despite being required to do so.

She allegedly acquired assets worth Tk84.35 lakh disproportionate to her known sources of income and kept the allegedly illicit assets in her possession.

The ACC subsequently filed a case against her over the allegations and, during the investigation, the ACC received information that the accused was allegedly attempting to leave the country secretly, according to the petition.

The ACC therefore sought the travel ban, saying that if she leaves the country and goes into hiding abroad, obtaining important documents related to the case could be hampered.
