World leaders are gathering at the United Nations headquarters in New York as the General Debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins on Tuesday (September 22).

The high-level General Debate will run from September 22 to 26 and conclude on September 28, according to the United Nations.

Around 130 heads of state and government, along with other senior representatives, will use the annual forum to set out their countries’ positions and priorities on major international issues.

This year’s debate is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman is serving as president of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

The heads of state and government are expected to attend the annual gathering, with conflicts in Iran and the wider Middle East, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo and Myanmar among the major issues confronting leaders. Artificial intelligence, climate change, global economic instability and the future of multilateral cooperation are also expected to feature prominently in discussions.

The UNGA high-level week comes at a time when the United Nations faces mounting pressure over its ability to respond effectively to armed conflicts and other global crises. Discussions are also expected to focus on reform of the UN system, including calls for changes to the structure and representation of the Security Council.

The General Debate traditionally opens with Brazil, followed by the host country, the United States.
