Bank accounts of ex-NBR chairman, first secretary frozen

A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the freezing of 25 bank accounts belonging to former National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman (senior secretary) Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and former NBR first secretary Eidtajul Islam over allegations of acquiring illegal wealth through irregularities and corruption.

Acting Judge Md Alamgir of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order following an application filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Saiduzzaman.

ACC prosecutor Tariqul Islam confirmed the matter.

According to the ACC petition, the two are accused of acquiring illegal wealth through irregularities and corruption.

During the investigation, the ACC found suspicious and unusual transactions in several bank accounts belonging to the two individuals and obtained information that the two were attempting to transfer or dispose of movable assets kept in the accounts.

If the assets were transferred, converted or moved before the completion of the investigation, it could hamper the investigation, the petition said.

The ACC therefore sought an immediate freeze on the money and other movable assets held in the bank accounts and requested the court to issue the freezing order to the chief executive officers/managing directors of BRAC Bank, Sonali Bank, Agrani Bank, Prime Bank, Mercantile Bank and Uttara Bank.
