New President to be elected in September: Law Minister

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said that Bangladesh’s next President will be elected during the upcoming parliamentary session in September, adding that there is no need to convene a special session of parliament for the election.

The information was reported by Channel 24.

Speaking to journalists at CIRDAP in the capital on Saturday (25 July), the law minister said the situation did not permit a special parliamentary session to elect the President.

Asked about the case involving the outgoing President, he declined to comment, saying, “It is too early to make any comment on the matter.”

Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh’s 22nd president on 24 April 2023. Under the Constitution, his five-year term had been due to expire in April 2028.
