Jamaat leader Akhtaruzzaman sent to one-day remand

A Dhaka court on Saturday granted one-day remand of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman for questioning over allegations of creating disorder and obstructing government officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport amid a shortage of luggage trolleys.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Albiruni Mir granted the remand in the afternoon.

Earlier, police sought a five-day remand of Akhtaruzzaman for questioning.

Sub-Inspector Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station filed the remand petition on Saturday.

Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on Friday from his residence at Road 35 in Dhamalkot area near the Dhaka Cantonment.

According to the remand petition, Akhtaruzzaman obstructed government employees in performing their duties at the sensitive Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, threatened and intimidated them, and assaulted an official, disrupting normal order and security at the airport.

The incident allegedly disrupted the normal arrival process for passengers returning from abroad.
