Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh has welcomed Dr Laura Tomm-Bonde, the newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh.
He also reaffirmed Canada’s continued commitment to supporting humanitarian and environmental initiatives in the country.
The High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh said the High Commissioner recently held an introductory meeting with Dr Tomm-Bonde, extending a warm welcome to Bangladesh to his fellow Canadian and discussing areas of future cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed Canada’s longstanding partnership with the IOM, particularly its support for projects aimed at improving living conditions and protecting the environment in Cox’s Bazar.
According to the High Commission, Canada has committed more than CAD 6 million in 2026 to IOM-implemented initiatives that provide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other forms of assistance to help reduce environmental degradation and restore the natural environment in Cox’s Bazar, which hosts a large population of forcibly displaced Rohingya refugees.
The Canadian mission said it looks forward to working closely with Dr Tomm-Bonde and the IOM team in the months and years ahead to advance shared humanitarian and development objectives in Bangladesh.
