Bangladesh must balance ties amid shifting regional dynamics

Bangladesh’s location at the northern tip of the Bay of Bengal has always been its greatest asset, placing the country right at the intersection of South and Southeast Asia with unmatched access to vital trade routes, seaports, and energy networks. Yet, that very same geography is rapidly turning into a strategic vulnerability. As global tensions rise, major world powers are increasingly viewing Dhaka through a cold, strategic lens. Caught amid evolving dynamics involving India and China, Washington’s Indo-Pacific push, persistent spillover from Myanmar, and recent diplomatic overtures from Pakistan, Bangladesh finds itself in an increasingly intense spotlight. The critical question facing the country today is whether it can turn this international focus into a catalyst for national growth, or if it is quietly being drawn into a stage for external proxy rivalries.

Building diplomatic and trade relations to meet economic and security needs is standard practice for any sovereign nation. The danger, however, begins when a routine relationship with one power starts to be interpreted as a hostile stance against another.

Indian media reports and various analyses suggest that India is closely watching Bangladesh’s growing engagement with China. India’s security, cross-border trade and connectivity with its northeastern states are closely linked to Bangladesh’s stability. Against this backdrop, India is attentive to China’s engagement with Bangladesh, which some observers view through a broader strategic lens rather than solely from a commercial perspective. However, experts say India should avoid excessive apprehension and instead prioritise diplomacy and maintaining stable relations with Dhaka. Rather than constantly pointing fingers or trying to exert pressure, New Delhi should move toward resolving differences through dialogue.

At the same time, recent initiatives for cooperation with Pakistan are creating new complications. The wounds left by the genocide committed by Pakistan in 1971 remain deep. Therefore, closer relations with Islamabad could create significant historical and security risks for Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh must also navigate its ties with Moscow and Washington. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant binds Bangladesh to Russian technology and nuclear fuel for decades to come, driven by urgent domestic electricity demands. On the economic side, the United States remains a crucial export destination for Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry, even as Washington seeks to align the Bay of Bengal with its broader Indo-Pacific strategy.

Small decisions can gradually produce major consequences. For example, borrowing from one country, purchasing military equipment from another, obtaining energy technology from a third, and depending on a fourth country for export markets may each appear reasonable when considered separately.

But taken together, these decisions can gradually create a situation in which a country’s freedom to make its own strategic decisions becomes increasingly constrained. The ultimate test for Bangladeshi foreign policy moving forward will not be choosing which superpower to side with, but ensuring that every single partnership strictly serves its own national interests first.
