A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former Gazipur-5 lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman, 73, to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order and fixed Monday for hearing on a seven-day police remand petition.

Prosecution Division sources confirmed the matter, saying the court sent the accused to jail as the remand hearing could not be held due to the unavailability of the original case records.

Earlier, Investigation Officer Inspector Md Masudur Rahman produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand following his arrest from a house in Gulshan on the night of 5 August.

According to the case documents, on the morning of 18 June, around 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies brought out a procession in the Tejgaon Industrial Area.

The case alleges that the accused chanted anti-government slogans, detonated cocktail bombs to create panic among the public and engaged in activities deemed anti-state, prompting police to file the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The remand petition states that preliminary interrogation and available evidence indicate the accused’s involvement in the incident. Investigators argued that custodial interrogation is necessary to identify and arrest other absconding suspects and collect further information related to the case.
