Legal notice served on govt seeking suspension of unsafe parasailing in Cox’s Bazar

A legal notice has been served on the government demanding the immediate suspension of unsafe and unregulated parasailing operations at Cox’s Bazar sea beach following the recent death of a tourist during the adventure activity.

The notice was sent on Tuesday by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Nishat Farzana to the authorities concerned.

According to the notice, a tourist died after falling while parasailing at Darianagar Beach in the Himchhari area of Cox’s Bazar on 1 August. Describing the incident as tragic, the notice said it highlights serious safety risks for tourists and that the authorities cannot evade responsibility.

It alleged that several private operators have been offering parasailing services at Cox’s Bazar without adequate safety measures, trained personnel or standard equipment. Despite multiple accidents, effective monitoring and regulatory oversight by the authorities have remained inadequate, it said.

The notice further stated that comments made by government officials following the latest incident revealed that the operator involved did not have official approval to conduct parasailing activities. It also noted that although the administration claims tourist magistrates remain on duty to ensure visitors’ safety, the fatal accident occurred without their knowledge.

The lawyer argued that the continuation of such unauthorised and hazardous activities despite the administration’s supervisory responsibility reflects regulatory failure and poses an ongoing threat to tourist safety.

The notice placed eight demands before the authorities, including the immediate suspension of all unsafe parasailing operations in Cox’s Bazar, verification of operators’ licences, approvals and safety standards, formation of an independent committee to investigate the recent fatal accident, legal action against those responsible, stricter monitoring by the Tourist Police and tourist magistrates, adequate compensation for the victim’s family, and public disclosure of actions taken against the operator of Fly Air Sea Sports Parasailing at Darianagar.

It also called for the formulation and strict enforcement of international-standard safety guidelines and a comprehensive regulatory framework for parasailing and all other adventure tourism activities.

The authorities have been asked to take the necessary steps within 15 working days.
