Urmi Group unveils squad for BGMEA Cup 2026

Urmi Group will participate in the BGMEA Cup 2026 with its own football team, with the squad selected through a player draft on 19 September set to represent the company in the tournament beginning on 20 October.

Ahead of the competition, Urmi Group hosted a meet-and-greet session with the players at its corporate office on Thursday, where senior management welcomed the squad. Team Urmi Group will begin its preparation matches from 2 October.

The session was attended by Urmi Group Director Faiaz Rahman, Group COO Mir Ashraful Hossain, Advisor to the Managing Director Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Badrul Amin and Turaag Active COO Nayeem Aktar, along with the players.

The discussion focused on the team’s preparations, expectations and participation in the upcoming competition. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening team bonding and building a stronger connection between the players and the organisation they will represent.

Urmi Group Director Faiaz Rahman said the company’s involvement in sports had gradually evolved from sponsoring events to supporting the long-term development of athletes.

“For the past six years, Urmi Group and Turaag Active have been involved with athletes and sporting events across disciplines, including marathon, chess, squash, football, boxing, golf and triathlon,” Rahman said.

He said the company’s involvement, which began with sponsoring and supporting sporting events, was now moving towards a longer-term commitment to developing athletes and nurturing promising sporting talent.

“As a squash player myself, I understand how important recognition, encouragement and institutional support can be for an athlete. We therefore want to play a more proactive role in identifying and developing promising squash players, with the broader ambition of helping them compete at the international level and bring greater recognition to Bangladesh on the global stage,” he said.

Rahman said talent and hard work alone were not always enough for athletes to reach their full potential.

“Talent and hard work are essential, but athletes also need people and institutions that believe in their potential and support them along the way,” he said.

“Urmi Group has always tried to remain connected with sports and stand beside athletes in their journey. Our participation in the BGMEA Cup is another reflection of that commitment.”

The BGMEA Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on 20 October with 16 participating teams. In the group stage, Team Urmi Group will face Musharaf Apparels, Bando Design and Fabrica Knit Composite Limited.

The squad comprises midfielders Badsha Alamgir, Azan Sayeed, Shahed and Roman; full-back Mohammad Akash Mia; goalkeeper Arman Hossain; wingers Moniruzzaman Rabbi and Sadat Hamid; defenders Sakib Sultan Rafu and Ibrahim Khalil; and strikers Nakichandra Das and Ishmam.

Wali Mohammad Hafiz will serve as coach, with Taimur Reza as assistant coach.
