Zia assassination convict Muzaffar produced before ICT

Retired Major Muzaffar Hossain, a convicted accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman, was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday in connection with allegations of crimes against humanity.

Muzaffar was brought before ICT-2 in the morning, where a judicial panel led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury was scheduled to hear the matter.

According to the prosecution, a production warrant had been issued against Muzaffar over allegations of involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the Awami League government’s tenure. Following the tribunal’s order, he was produced before the court on Thursday.

The prosecution said it would seek to have Muzaffar shown arrested in the crimes against humanity case and request permission to interrogate him.

On 21 July, the prosecution filed an application seeking a production warrant against Muzaffar, who is one of the convicted accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman.

Muzaffar was arrested from a residence in the Banani area of the capital on the night of 15 July after remaining a fugitive for nearly 45 years. The following day, he was handed over to the Military Police at Dhaka Cantonment.

Meanwhile, retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury was also produced before the tribunal on Thursday.

The prosecution had been scheduled to submit its investigation report against Masud on 21 July in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July mass uprising 2024 in Feni. On that day, prosecutors sought an additional two months to complete the investigation.

However, the tribunal did not set a new date, citing allegations of links between Masud and Muzaffar, and ordered Masud to be produced before the court.
