Water recedes, but suffering grows

Floodwaters have started receding in parts of Chattogram after days of heavy rain and upstream water flow, but residents in Satkania, Lohagara, Banshkhali and Chandanaish are facing growing hardships.

Thousands of families are struggling with shortages of food and safe drinking water, damaged communication networks and prolonged power outages. Many people have been forced to live in difficult conditions as floodwater remains in their homes.

Although the district administration said it has started distributing relief supplies, many affected residents complained that they have yet to receive any assistance.

Disrupted road communication has also made it difficult for authorities to deliver relief materials and ensure emergency services.

Many families cannot cook as water remains trapped inside their homes. As a result, a large number of people are relying on dry food.

Chattogram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Masudur Rahman told Daily Sun that floods had affected 754,590 people from 188,648 families across 176 unions and wards in the city and district until 11pm on Friday.

He said the district administration is working to deliver relief materials, dry food, safe drinking water and other essential support to affected people. Authorities are using alternative routes to send assistance to areas where regular communication has been disrupted.

Among the worst-affected areas, large parts of Satkania, Lohagara, Anwara and Banshkhali remain under water. Nearly five lakh people in these upazilas remain stranded by floodwaters.

In Banshkhali, tidal surges and upstream water flow have damaged many homes in western areas, including Chhanua, Puichhari, Shekherkhil, Saral and Kahargona.

The flood situation has also not returned to normal in Chandanaish, where low-lying areas under two municipalities and eight unions remain submerged.
