Dhaka, Sunday:
Azizur Rahman Aziz, a key associate of Shamim Osman, has been granted a two-day remand by the court for further questioning in an extortion case. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka approved the remand on Sunday following an application by Inspector Mohammad Jahangir of the Detective Branch (DB) Tejgaon division, who is investigating the case. Inspector Jahangir confirmed the remand to the media.
Aziz was arrested on October 26 while attempting to flee to India via the Darsana border in Chuadanga. He is named as the eighth accused in a case filed last September at Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, which alleges widespread extortion and looting of goods from Ershad Group’s Tejgaon warehouse between 2013 and 2024.
Ershad Group Chairman Ershad Ali stated that Aziz and his accomplices were involved in looting machinery and materials from the group’s steel rod manufacturing factory in Narayanganj. Ali added that Shamim Osman, Aziz, and their associates allegedly seized the factory after falsely implicating the chairman in a criminal case, contributing significantly to the company’s loan default.
The case is currently under investigation by the Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
