What to eat and avoid to keep your gut healthy

Fruits are widely regarded as essential for a healthy diet, offering fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help regulate body functions, support immunity, and prevent chronic diseases.

However, not all fruits are equally beneficial for digestive health, and some may even cause discomfort if consumed inappropriately.

Papaya

For those dealing with constipation, ripe papaya can be a smart addition to the morning routine. Its natural fiber and high water content support bowel movement without being harsh on the system. Starting the day with papaya on an empty stomach can help promote regular digestion.

Banana

People struggling with acidity may find relief in bananas. These varieties are naturally low in acid and high in soluble fiber, which can help soothe the stomach lining.

Fully ripe bananas are preferable, as unripe ones contain resistant starch that may trigger bloating or slow down digestion.

Pineapple

In cases of bloating, especially after a heavy or protein-rich meal, pineapple can aid digestion. It contains enzymes that help break down proteins and reduce gas formation. However, due to its acidic nature, pineapple should be consumed in moderation by individuals who are prone to acid reflux or gastric sensitivity.

Guava

For those looking to increase their protein intake from fruits, guava stands out. Alongside its protein content, it also provides dietary fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants that contribute to gut health and overall wellness.

What to avoid

On the other hand, some commonly consumed fruits may not be ideal for those experiencing digestive issues. All kings of citrus fruits (lime), though popular for their hydrating and vitamin-rich qualities, lack strong digestive enzymes.

It may lead to bloating in sensitive individuals, especially if consumed after meals or in large amounts.

While fruits remain an important part of a balanced diet, understanding their effects on digestion can help make more informed choices.

In the Bangladeshi context, where many of these fruits are readily available and frequently consumed, awareness of their impact on gut health can support better dietary decisions — particularly for those dealing with common issues like acidity, bloating, and constipation.
