US President Donald Trump has decided not to resume strikes against Iran for now to give diplomacy a chance, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.

The report said Trump hosted a meeting of top US national security officials on Friday morning to discuss next steps on Iran, and made no formal decision, Sputnik International reported.

The US leader, the report said, told aides he wanted to give the diplomatic process more time to work.

However, other American media reports suggest the situation appears to be different, with Trump allegedly seriously considering new strikes on Iran, and US officials and military personnel already beginning to cancel their plans for the long weekend ahead of Memorial Day.

Last June, Trump traveled to Bedminster for a weekend but cut the trip short and returned to Washington for a meeting with his national security team. The media later reported that he monitored strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities from the White House, while adding that the final decision to attack was made during his time at a golf course.

Russia opposes the resumption of aggression against Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. The resumption of the conflict in the Persian Gulf will have a negative impact on the global economy, the minister said, adding that Russia advocates for a dialogue between Iran and Arab states.
