Tigers return to Test cricket eyeing big scores and milestones

Bangladesh is set to face visiting Ireland in the first match of a two-Test series starting Tuesday at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, marking the Tigers’ return to the longest format after a four-and-a-half-month hiatus. The match will begin at 9:30 AM BST.

Though not part of the current ICC Test Championship, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto views the series as vital preparation for a busy 2026 calendar, featuring several high-profile opponents at home and abroad. Bangladesh has played two Tests in this series so far, earning a point percentage of 16.67.

“We have a detailed plan for this Test Championship cycle, aiming to win more matches than before,” Shanto said at a pre-match press conference on Monday.

Shanto leads the side after being reappointed following a previous fallout with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Both parties agreed he would prioritize the team’s interests over personal issues, with the board pledging full support.

The series also marks the approach of Mushfiqur Rahim’s 100th Test—the first Bangladeshi to reach this milestone—set for the second Test at Mirpur starting November 19. Ahead of his 99th Test, Shanto expressed excitement to share the journey with the veteran.

“I hope the wicket will be sporting, offering batsmen opportunities for big scores if the groundsmen follow instructions,” he added.

Bangladesh is expected to open with in-form Mahmudul Hasan Joy. The team may opt for three spinners and two pacers, with left-arm spinner Hasan Murad poised to earn his Test debut. He would join Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam in spin, while Hasan Mahmud will lead the pace attack alongside Ebadot Hossain or Khaled Ahmed.

Despite Ireland’s limited Test experience, Shanto warned against underestimating them due to their county cricket backgrounds.

“They have the ability to score big runs, and many have county experience. I don’t see them as a small team. It’s an international Test match, and we must respect and play accordingly. We expect a challenge, and we are ready to meet it,” he concluded.
