Sohel Rana, an independent parliamentary candidate and social activist for Dhaka-13 (Mohammadpur–Adabor–Sher-e-Bangla Nagar), has said that the once-heritage-rich constituency has now turned into a city of fear and anxiety. He vowed to free ordinary people from the scourge of extortion, mugging, and drugs, and to replace “business-driven politics” with “politics of service” by contesting the election with the ‘Pitcher’ (Kolosh) symbol.
He made these remarks on Wednesday (January 21) while unveiling his election manifesto at a press conference. At the event, Sohel Rana also expressed his gratitude to the people of Dhaka-13 for their support and encouragement.
Addressing the media, he said, “I am contesting the election as an independent candidate, staying outside the traditional political circles and muscle power. For the last decade, I have been working for the welfare of street children and underprivileged people. From that experience, I have realized that to solve the core problems of society, active participation in the national parliament is essential.”
Expressing concern over the current situation of the constituency, he added, “Mohammadpur, Adabor, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar were once symbols of heritage and pride. But today, civic security here is in a severe crisis. This constituency is burdened by waterlogging, unbearable traffic congestion, and misgovernance. If elected, I will prioritize creating employment for the youth, building a modern and livable city, and ensuring women’s safety.”
Calling on voters to support him, Sohel Rana further said, “The Pitcher is not just a symbol; it represents humane politics. I am not seeking votes for power, but to transform Dhaka-13 into a safe and developed constituency. As a son of this soil, I seek your prayers and support.”
Representatives from both print and electronic media were present at the press conference.
Expressing optimism, Sohel Rana said that if voters are able to cast their votes fearlessly, the beginning of real change in Dhaka-13 will be possible.
Notably, he is widely known in the area as a “Friend of Street Children” due to his long-standing work with underprivileged children. If elected, his top priorities will include ensuring proper child development and quality education, safeguarding mental and physical health, protecting citizens’ rights, ensuring administrative accountability, and creating employment to build a crime-free and secure Dhaka-13.
Reiterating his pledge for change, the independent candidate said,
“I am Sohel Rana, your own son. If you give me the opportunity to be your voice in Parliament, I will establish everyone’s rightful entitlements, dignity, and justice, Insha’Allah.”
