DUCSU Cancels Sheikh Hasina’s Controversial Life Membership

Dhaka | Wednesday:
The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has unanimously cancelled the life membership of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which had been controversially granted to her in 2019.

The decision was taken during DUCSU’s second general meeting held on Wednesday evening.

DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem confirmed that the 2019 resolution conferring life membership was unconstitutional and beyond the scope of the union’s rules.

“The issue of granting Hasina life membership was illegal and undemocratic. Today’s meeting decided to cancel that resolution,” he said.

The meeting, presided over by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and DUCSU President Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, was attended by the vice-president, general secretary, assistant general secretary, and other executive council members.

In addition to revoking Sheikh Hasina’s membership, the meeting passed several other key decisions, including a proposal to include DUCSU elections in Dhaka University’s academic calendar, which will now be forwarded to the university syndicate for consideration.

DUCSU General Secretary Farhad Hossain said the cancellation restores democratic integrity within the union.

“No clause in DUCSU’s constitution allows anyone to be made a life member. Cancelling this decision is a step in favour of democratic principles,” he added.

The 2019 resolution had sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing the previous DUCSU committee of acting politically and beyond its constitutional authority. The current committee’s decision is aimed at reasserting the union’s principled and democratic framework.
