After the massive success in Bangladesh, and Australia, BYD Sealion 6 is now ready to conquer the hearts of the people of Japan. The land of JDM vehicles now faces stiff competition in the realm of reliability and sustainability with this ‘New-Era’ Super Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Starting this month, the BYD Sealion 6, equipped with BYD’s proprietary super plug-in hybrid system ‘DM-i,’ was introduced across Japan.
The BYD Sealion 6, introduced as a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) SUV to the Japanese market, is a sophisticated hybrid, where the electric power ensures the quietness and smooth driving feel characteristic of pure electric vehicles (EVs) while retaining the capability for comfortable long-distance travel to meet diverse customer lifestyle needs.
The model is offered in two grade configurations: FWD (Front-Wheel Drive), which prioritizes extended driving range, and AWD (All-Wheel Drive), which delivers sporty SUV performance, including acceleration from 0–100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The Sealion 6 adopts DM-i, a super hybrid technology evolved over 17 years, consisting of a 1.5-liter high-efficiency engine, a DM-i-dedicated Blade Battery, and a high-efficiency Electric Hybrid System (EHS); this system allows the motor to handle the majority of driving, resulting in a quiet ride and excellent fuel economy.
With a full charge, the FWD model can drive up to 100 km in EV mode for daily trips, establishing a truly advanced electric powertrain that eliminates range anxiety during extended travel through the optimal combination of engine power generation and motor drive.
Aesthetically, the design embodies the distinctive ocean-inspired theme of BYD’s Ocean Series, featuring the Ocean X Face design and a modern interior accented with brown highlights, ambient lighting, and marine-themed sport seats (equipped with heating and ventilation in the front), complemented by a crystal-like electronic shifter and dual wireless chargers on the center console.
For convenience and comfort, the vehicle integrates a 15.6-inch high-resolution display with the latest infotainment system, full support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual wireless charging, and improved voice control. As a PHEV, charging capability is strong, supporting up to 6 kW AC and 18 kW DC fast charging, and notably featuring V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) for external power supply during outdoor activities or emergencies.
Further enhancing practicality are features such as a heated steering wheel, high-sound-insulation windows, a panoramic sunroof, and a versatile cargo volume of 425 L, expandable to 1,440 L with the rear seats folded and a flat loading floor.
The launch of the BYD Sealion 6 in Japan, following its successful regional expansion, is a major strategic step for BYD. This moves positions the Sealion 6 to redefine the hybrid SUV segment in a key global market, accelerating BYD’s leadership in new energy vehicles worldwide.
Previously, BYD Bangladesh launched the FWD version back in February 2025. Since then, more than 200 units have been sold, and it continues to be a fan favorite in the PHEV segment in Bangladesh.
